Alexander Technique rocks!
I just finished a week-long workshop at CU Boulder on The Alexander Technique and it was amazing; so many things that I’ve wondered about through the years as a singer were illuminated and clarified. The technique is a way of thinking and using our bodies as effortlessly as possible, thereby staying as healthy and pain-free as possible as we move through our lives. You can’t beat that. Buy a book, take a lesson or a workshop… check it out! www.alexandertechnique.com
Free singing tip #1!
The sound of your voice, the resonance of your voice is greatly affected by how open your mouth is, and how you’re shaping vowels. You have total control over it! If you keep your mouth tight and small, your voice will sound AND FEEL tight and small. Try it out. Sing a simple “ah” in a comfortable range and hold it. Keep your mouth small for a minute and then drop it open. Listen to and feel the difference- its huge! Now play with the shape of your “ah”… try it wide and smiley. How does that sound and feel? Drop your jaw way, way open. What does that do? Find the shape that feels and sounds good to you and memorize it so you can make a habit of it.
As a teacher, I'm proud to put all my varied experiences together into a teaching style that is effective and accessible. The foundation of my technique is 10 years of classically-based vocal study, but my 30+ years of pop/rock/jazz performance and my holistic studies at Naropa and of the Alexander Technique have equally informed my take on singing and teaching voice. My style is relaxed & intuitive, backed-up by a wealth of education, knowledge and experience, and a strong desire to help people find the beauty in their own voices.
